What you need to know

The general rule requires a residence permit application to be submitted at least 40 calendar days before the applicant's lawful stay expires. Exceptions exist, including for certain permit types and some remote renewals. The same rule cannot be applied to every application.

What to do in practice

First, identify the basis for residence and check the current document requirements with the Public Service Development Agency. Then plan your submission, allowing time for translations and supporting documents. Obtaining a residence permit and having a residence card issued are separate stages.

General information. The rules and documents applicable to your particular case require an individual assessment.
